Dr James Ooi carved a career in sports and exercise medicine through a passion for applying the principles of elite healthcare for the general public. James was granted the Monash University Scholarship for Excellence in recognition of academic achievement. After graduating with honours in 2016, he trained at The Alfred Hospital, culminating in his role as trauma registrar for the state service.

During this time, James undertook further training including advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound,therapeutic injections and the Graduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy. He was awarded for outstanding performance in Orthopaedics. James enjoys maintaining a broad skillset, continuing to assist orthopaedic surgeries, whilst being actively involved across numerous elite sports. It is an ardent passion for improved quality-of-life and functional health outcomes that guides James’ balanced holistic approach to optimising physical function. James also works with elite athletes at the Victorian Institute of Sport. He is the current Chief Medical Officer for The Combat Institute of Australia (CombatAUS). James has a personal background in bodyweight fitness, strength and conditioning. Outside of work, you are likely to find James savouring a coffee whilst devouring NBA stats or hanging out at/on the (pull-up) bar.

Dr Hilary Grover grew up taking every opportunity to watch and play sport. In high school she undertook work experience with an AFL club doctor and from that moment she knew she would pursue a career in Sports and Exercise Medicine. Whilst Hilary was in medical school she was a founding member of the Sports and Exercise Medicine Student’s Association and started volunteering at amateur football clubs as a trainer.

She has enthusiastically worked across various sporting bodies including AFL, AFLW, Cricket Australia, A-League Men’s and Women’s and WNBL. Whilst working with elite teams has been an area of interest for Hilary, she also loves to focus on working with people in the community and keeping them fit, active and pain free. Hilary’s passion area is female athlete health and is currently working across a variety of sporting codes with female athletes. She was the Head Doctor at North Melbourne AFLW 2020-2024, and was part of the premiership winning medical team in 2024. Hilary now works for the Melbourne Football Club as an AFL team doctor. Hilary is a current Australian Women's Cricket Team touring Doctor, and travelled to Dubai to support the team at the T20 World Cup in 2024. Hilary also travelled with the U19 Women’s Australian Cricket team to South Africa in 2023 and from this has had an interest in working with adolescent and paediatric patients. In her personal life Hilary enjoys running and keeping fit across a number of disciplines. An enthusiast of all things AFL/W she competed in the Victorian Amateur Football Association League since the start of the women’s league.

Dr David Long completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne in 2006. After working and training in the field of critical care and emergency medicine for nearly 10 years David decided to retrain in sport and exercise medicine and was awarded his fellowship of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians in 2021.

In addition to his clinic-based practice, David has more than 10 years experience as a team physician at elite level VFL/AFL clubs and for 6 years at elite level rugby union (Super Rugby). He has also provided medical coverage for a variety of other sporting codes including gymnastics, motor cross, cycling, and ultramarathon to name a few. David is the current Chief Medical Officer with the Geelong Football Club. His special interests include acute injury management and the biomechanical basis of recurrent soft tissue injury in all sports. David also has a background in research having completed a Bachelor of Science with honours in anatomy and neuroscience and worked in neuroscience and diabetes research for 5 years. When not at work he enjoys time with his young children and continued involvement in musical endeavours as a compliment to his medical career.

Dr Daniel Friedman is dedicated to helping people of all ages and abilities achieve their health and performance goals. After graduating with First Class Honours from his medical degree at Monash University in 2019, Daniel has gained diverse sport and exercise medicine experience in Australia and abroad. Most recently based at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Daniel served as the team doctor for Basketball Australia’s Men’s Centre of Excellence Program and the NBA Global Academy.

At the AIS, Daniel also supported a range of junior and senior teams across Olympic and Paralympic sports, including national Rowing and Paddle teams at the AIS European Training Centre in Italy. Other international experience includes providing medical services at World Athletics and World Aquatics Championships. Closer to home, Daniel has spent time working across all levels of Australian Rules Football and Rugby.Beyond his clinical work, Daniel is actively involved in research and public health. He has authored textbook chapters, published in leading journals, and contributed to World Health Organization physical activity initiatives. Daniel is currently an Associate Editor for the British Journal of Sports Medicine and previously hosted their podcast for multiple years. His academic interests span female athlete health, nutrition and chronic disease, and physical activity as medicine. If not making coffee, you will likely find Daniel on the bicycle or tennis court.

Andy Stephens started his career at OPSMC in 1990 as a massage therapist. He also worked at the Royal Ballet Company in the UK from 1994 to 1997 and Essendon Football (1999 – 2003) before graduating with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from La Trobe University in 2002. He has since been appointed physiotherapist to the Hawthorn Football Club (2008-2010) and the AFL umpires (2005-2007, and 2012 onwards)

Andy completed his Master of Sports Physiotherapy in 2012, and has a special interest in the ageing athlete population, dance medicine, track and field and Australian Rules Football. His clinical approach combines exercise therapy and patient education with hands-on treatment to address existing problems and prevent the development of new injuries.

Andrew Jowett realized at a young age that despite his obsession with sport and diverse sporting interests that he was never destined for a career as a sportsman. Throughout his medical training however he maintained his links and interests in sport to develop his expertise combining both passions. This culminated in the fabulous adventure that was the World Cup in Germany 2006 as the Socceroos national team doctor.

On a daily basis Andrew wishes to assist members of the general public achieve their sporting, health andfitness goals by drawing upon his expertise at the elite level as well as his personal sporting mediocrity!Andrew has special interests in sports such as all football codes, baseball and throwing sports as well as musculoskeletal problems such as exercise-induced leg pain, groin pain, tendon problems and shoulder pain.His master’s research was into compartment syndrome and he continues to investigate exertional leg pain.Andrew is passionate about Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre and the concept of multidisciplinary sports medicine. He has developed his role at the clinic to take on the position of clinic director to further enhance Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre as a leading provider of sports medicine services, education and training. Andrew completed 14 seasons as a doctor with Collingwood FC in 2009. He was fortunate enough to maintain his involvement in elite teams by joining the Hawthorn FC medical team in 2012 and provides backup medical support 3 premierships later! He served as team doctor for the Australian Socceroos from 1996-2006, continued to advise FFA on medical matters including the medical structure of the A-League before joining Melbourne Victory as medical director in 2014. He led the accreditation in 2013 of Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre as Australia’s only FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence as part of a worldwide chain of 32 centres.Andrew is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians as well as holding affiliations to Sports Medicine Australia and AFL Medical Officers Associations both as a member and on the executive. Andrew was appointed Chief Medical Officer for the Football Federation of Victoria (FFV) in 2013 and Chairman of Sports Medicine Australia in 2015. Adam is passionate about sport and exercise and takes great satisfaction out of helping all members of the community across all stages of life achieve their goals in a safe, enjoyable and healthy fashion whether they are elite athletes or simply inactive patients wishing to get active and lead a healthier, more rewarding life.

Adam became a Fellow with the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) in 2008 after successfully completing 6 years of training in Melbourne and Sydney. Soon after, he was appointed Chief Medical Officer for Athletics Australia and headed up the medical team for the successful Australian Track and Field team at both the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympic Games. From 2014-2017 he worked with the excellent medical and conditioning team at Hawthorn Football Club, with the highlight being the 2014 and 2015 Premierships. In 2015, Adam started his 6 year term on the ACSEP Board as Vice President sitting on the Continuing Professional Development and Practice Accreditation Committees. In 2016, Adam was elected President of ACSEP and held this post for three years. As President, Adam also sat on the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges (CPMC) and strongly advocated for equality and diversity, improving indigenous, regional and remote health outcomes, as well as doctors mental health and making specialist Sport and Exercise Medical care accessible to all members of the community. Adam was an inaugural member of the Health Champions of Change Coalition. Adam is a mentor on the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association mentorship program and is very active in training and educating the next generation of Sport and Exercise Physicians and our allied health community. He is on the Aotearoa NZ OA Summit Committee and member of the RACGP review committee of the non surgical management of hip and knee osteoarthritis. His professional areas of interest include athletics, all codes of football, triathlon, alpine skiing, lower limb injuries, exercise prescription, adolescent injuries, fatigue in athletes and exercise induced asthma, on which he completed his Masters Research in 2008. In clinic, Adam also performs ultrasound-guided interventions. In March 2021, Adam and his young family moved across the Tasman to join the Axis Sports Medicine team in Queenstown, with the goal of exploring the magnificent Aotearoa and all her wonders. Adam is still be available for private telehealth video consultations for his existing OPSMC patients. Adam enjoys trail running, skiing, mountain biking, tennis, hiking , kayaking and exploring everything Aotearoa has to offer with his family. Exercise in nature really is the best medicine!
